ABOUT

I am Jerker Österlind, the owner of Studio Hermitage. I’m the main full-time person here.

I have a bachelor degree in composition and Ia master’s in music production at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

I’ve been working more or less professionally with producing, recording and mixing since 2015 and have played in a ton of different projects through the years (mudbody, Brainchild, The Perfect Sign Language Pistol, Deathember, Kloster, as well as a lot of films with Fennek Film and art projects like this one).

I feel it’s important to remain a passionate fan of music, and to always seek to get better at what I do. Craftsmanship breeds creativity, and working with skilled and motivated artists inspires me to keep evolving my craft as a producer, musician, songwriter, and engineer.

Some of my academic work and other projects can be seen on my personal site, here: www.mudbody.com

I initially built this studio to work on my own music, but over the years it has grown into a serious career – something that I am very thankful for. Working with inspired artists, great musicians, and awesome sounds is a privilege that I enjoy massively.

Early building phase, around 2014.

The studio was designed by LN Akustikmiljö (they designed Meshuggah’s old studio in Spånga!). It consists of two acoustically treated rooms, one iso booth for amplifiers, a small kitchen, and a restroom – it also has a very nice garden to chill in when the weather allows. It’s located in a quiet suburban area, free from distractions, and there are a couple of restaurants and a grocery store within walking distance. The facilities allows for live recording of bands as well as a professional mixing environment with the expected hardware, microphones, and instruments.

Part of the live room. More images of the facilities can be seen in the gallery.

My main focus in the studio is to work with bands and artists to realize their vision and help them step up to the next level.
The preferred way of working in Studio Hermitage is the full package – we do songwriting, pre-production and arrangements together, and make sure that the songs are as good as they can be before hitting the main recording sessions.
When we do start recording, we spend the time needed to perfect the drum sound, find the right guitar amp for each song, and the best mic for the vocalist. This holistic approach lets everyone add their absolute best to the music, and makes sure that no corners are cut in making the best art we can make, together.

The studio was previously known as Soul Noise Studios. The name ”Hermitage” comes from hermit retreats. Caves and temples, places for isolated contemplation. This is an interesting concept that inspires me, as well as a joke about my own tendency to kind of retreat from the world and get lost in the music… perhaps too much, sometimes.

The porch outside the studio. A good place to relax between takes.
